Controversial German Boiler Ban Sparks EU Single Market Concerns, Companies Allege
US and European Engineering Companies Warn German Bill Violates EU Single Market Principles
Manufacturers Concerned About Provisions in German Climate Legislation
US and European engineering companies have raised concerns about a German bill that aims to replace gas boilers with heat pumps. They argue that the bill contains provisions that violate the principles of the EU single market. The draft law includes a clause that allows the government to prohibit the use of a refrigerating gas called hydrofluoroolefins in heat pump systems. Manufacturers believe that this provision is counterproductive and goes against the principles of the EU internal market. They warn that removing HFOs from the market in Germany would have far-reaching negative impacts on energy efficiency, energy security, and financial costs to citizens.
Boiler Ban Controversy in Germany
The boiler ban has become one of the most hotly contested German laws in recent years, causing a decline in the popularity of Olaf Scholz's coalition government. The planned Buildings Energy Act, expected to be passed by the Bundestag in the autumn, requires that all heating systems installed in new buildings in Germany from next year must be at least 65% powered by renewables.
