Beware of Scammers: AMD Issues Warning on Fake Starfield GPU Giveaways Targeting PC Gamers
AMD Warns PC Gamers About Fake Starfield GPU Giveaways
Introduction
AMD has issued a warning to PC gamers about fake Starfield GPU giveaways. The company advises gamers to be cautious and not fall for scams that try to take advantage of the hype and excitement surrounding Bethesda's upcoming space epic.
AMD's Warning
Bill Murphy, AMD's Go-to-Market Manager for Software and Gaming, specifically warns gamers about fake giveaways for the custom Starfield graphics card made by Team Red in limited numbers. He urges gamers to be wary and not believe that these giveaways are affiliated with AMD or Bethesda.
Scammers and Fake Giveaways
Murphy points out a specific giveaway on X (formerly Twitter) by 'Indie Kings', a PC gaming community on Steam. He emphasizes that AMD does not consider this giveaway to be one of their partners. It is important to stay skeptical of any giveaway offers from unfamiliar outlets to avoid falling victim to scammers.
Analysis: Caution is Needed
The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, the GPU being given away, is highly sought after by gamers. It is currently ranked number 4 in the best graphics card roundup. The Starfield-themed design of the GPU adds to its appeal. AMD is also giving away limited edition Starfield-themed CPUs, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which pairs well with the GPU. These limited edition products are not for sale and can only be obtained through giveaways. Scammers are taking advantage of this by enticing gamers to enter fake giveaways.
However, caution is advised even when considering legitimate avenues. There is currently an auction on eBay for a package containing both the Starfield GPU and CPU. The bid is currently at $3,650 (US) with five days remaining. Although the proceeds will go to charity (Mental Drive Inc), it is still important to approach such auctions with caution.
